Reflecting on Your Wins: A Year-End Financial Gratitude Exercise

As the year comes to a close, it’s time to celebrate every win—no matter how small. Each one is a step forward, and they all matter. If we only celebrate the big milestones, we miss the journey—the small, consistent victories that keep us on track toward our biggest goals. These smaller wins are the foundation of progress, the proof that you’re showing up and doing the work. I invite you to zoom out and look at your financial journey with fresh eyes. When you take a step back, you’ll see the path you’ve been paving—steady, intentional, and worth celebrating.

Why Gratitude is Essential for Healing Your Relationship with Money

Gratitude shifts your focus from what’s lacking to what’s thriving. When it comes to money, this perspective is critical. Financial stress often stems from a scarcity mindset—the belief that there’s never enough. But when you look back at what you’ve accomplished, you’ll notice that progress was made, even if it didn’t always feel significant in the moment. Gratitude empowers you to:

  • Build confidence in your ability to manage money.
  • Strengthen your relationship with finances.
  • Create motivation to tackle future goals.

We wrote a whole blog about it; if you want to dive deeper into how gratitude can completely change your relationship to money, read it here

Now, let’s dive into a year-end financial gratitude exercise to help you acknowledge your growth and enter the new year with clarity and confidence.

Step 1: Write Down Your Wins

Grab a notebook or open a notes app, and create a list of financial wins this year. Think of milestones big and small. Here are some prompts to get you started:

  • Debt Reduction: Did you pay off a credit card? Make an extra payment on your loan?
  • Savings Growth: Did you start or grow your emergency fund, retirement account, or travel savings?
  • Smart Decisions: Did you stick to a budget, avoid impulse purchases, or negotiate a better deal on something?
  • Investments in Yourself: Did you take a course, start a side hustle, or make a career move that increased your income?
  • Family Wins: Did you teach your kids about money, contribute to a 529 plan, or support a loved one financially?

Step 2: Celebrate Progress, Not Perfection

Too often, we focus on what didn’t go as planned. But perfection isn’t the goal—progress is. Take a moment to:

  • Reflect on any obstacles you overcame.
  • Acknowledge the habits you built or strengthened.
  • Recognize how far you’ve come since this time last year.

For example, maybe you didn’t pay off all your debt, but you reduced it in some capacity. That’s a HUGE step forward!

Step 3: Connect Wins to Values

Your financial goals should reflect your values. As you look at your list of wins, ask yourself:

  • What mattered most this year? Did your spending and saving align with those priorities?
  • What brought you joy? Was it a trip, a new experience, or simply the peace of mind that comes with financial stability?

By connecting your wins to your values, you can ensure your future goals feel authentic and sustainable.

Step 4: Set Intentions for Next Year

Gratitude isn’t just about looking back; it’s about using what you’ve learned to move forward. Based on this year’s wins, ask yourself:

  • What financial habits do I want to continue?
  • What new goals excite me for next year?
  • How can I celebrate progress throughout the year, not just at the end?

A Gentle Reminder: Progress Looks Different for Everyone

Your financial journey is uniquely yours. Comparing your wins to someone else’s is a fast track to dissatisfaction. Instead, honor where you are and trust that the steps you’re taking today are building the foundation for the future you’re dreaming of.

Reflecting on your financial wins is more than an exercise—it’s a celebration of your growth, resilience, and determination. By ending the year with gratitude, you’re not just looking back; you’re laying the groundwork for an even more empowered year ahead.

So grab a cup of tea, find a quiet spot, and reflect on your wins. You’ve accomplished more than you think—and that’s something to be truly grateful for.
